We came off the road for several months to work in the studio, and I thought maybe I should try some other way to keep myself feeling fit, because I was feeling tired and weird all of the time. Id be comin off it, and probably didnt know that I was probably just jonesing for a drink. I was interested in anything I could get ideas from. Then I was playing lead lines on the violin. For in- stance, The Grand Wazoo was almost a jazz big-band record. I wouldnt drink onstage, but Id get offstage, and when I got in the bus, thered be a chilled bottle of whatever vodka I was drinking, and Id start plowin into it. So, yeah. You can be working 10, 12, 14 hours every day. And it rolls around, and halfway through the song it starts rolling back out. But I didnt see it until the first time it aired, that Sunday night. The music was a mix of instrumental orientated rock-fusion and progressive tunes with vocals. It was unbelievable. So at the end of a night, you feel great. And Jon saidor Neal, I cant remember, it was so long agoOkay, well take some time off. And I said, You dont understand. And it took a few more months, until October, and then I was ready, and found the right doctor for me. We dont get along, but I love his playing. And he played the tape for em, and they werent sure. But you ended up having creative and personal differences with Jon and Neal, differences that led to you leaving the bandis that a fair assessment of what happened? I thought it was silly to license songs for commercials and stuff. What did you mean when you said, on that VH1 special, that youd never really felt like part of the band? With most rims, if they get dented a little bit, the head will never seat right and you'll never be able to tune the drum. I'm using those new Quick- Beat hi-hats, with no bell on the bottom and holes drilled in it. And to a degree I guess we are. When you changed your sound, what was the thought process behind that? So I thought, Well, maybe Im not supposed to be there.. That was the one that had Oh Sherrie on it? And I felt that we still had wings, yknow? Because if you do, you will fracture the stone. _[A few days after I talked to Perry, I did a follow-up interview with Neal Schon, Journeys co-founder and lead guitarist, in which we discussed some of the same issues Perry brought up. Herbie built that band around Neal because hes a star on his own from a guitar standpoint. Did they give you any advice? During the time I was with Bowie, I also did Nils Lofgren's first solo album. And we do have some turbulence between us. Yeah. It sounds progressive, and Neals singin on it, he obviously doesnt sing like you. But that was his open door, to go do it, and that was sort of the beginning of the demise. They werent sure about any of it. Singers live on the edge of being powerful, being strong, and not degrading their voice, and its the most difficult edge to walk. And people didnt understand what that meant. So its always a fine, artful dance. And theyre good. Way after. AD: He's a drummer by nature. So my drum solo lasted about 20 minutes. But the fact that you had thatthats a measure of how big you were. Is it just that people can relate to the sentiment in that song? But I didn't want to play that long. And she gave him the message, he called me from there, and I said Maybe we should talk about getting back together, Id like to see what you think, lets have coffee when you get back. So we had coffee, talked about it, and he said, Well, we should get together with Neal and talk about it, and me and Neal and Jon had coffee, and that was kind of the beginning. There was one guy who really gave me a hard time taking apart everything I did. Was that frustrating for you, that he sort of pulled out like that? So he and I interact the most on stage. I just tune them and that's about it. When I did the "Stable of Stars"' ad for Ludwig, I was talking to a lot of people l didn't know, and they were the drummers for certain bands. I mean, gee whiz. But it's hard to teach kids that. But in January, Jon told me on the phone, I just wanna know. And I said, Dont call it Journey. Would you ever be interested in doing regular studio work, such as commercials? "Just waking up in Vegas," he says. If I had started two years earlier, I would have gone out and taken lessons, but by this time, I was too shy and I didn't feel confident. I got sick and tired of doing that because I wasn't advancing. I got ProTools, and Im working on stuff. Did you feel like you were the new guy, still, after all that? In England, at that time, American records were about four years behind. They'd get a gig somewhere else paying a couple of pounds more, so they would send a substitute to play with me. God bless him, Aynsley [Dunbar] came in and redid it all. Did that tension persist throughout your tenure with the band? leave t.hat .hole, the snare stands out big, and it still sounds like you're playing the bass drum on that beat. What happened was, I was in Los Angeles, trying to get signed, with a band that I was in at the timeit was called the Alien Project, but it was also called Street Talk. RM: I noticed you using traditional grip at times. Probably some time ago, yeah, I could have done that. On stage, Craig is the person I react to the most because solo-wise, he's the one who is always doing something new. You can't have million-note fills allover the place be- cause people can't hear them, they can't understand it, and so they won't want to buy it. I stood up and screamed. When a drummer gets calluses on his hands, they no longer chafe and they no longer blister, and thats fantastic. Once I lock into a song, the rest of the band comes together fast, so I've decided that it's my job to learn the arrangement and then just play it. I went down there and sat in with him, and boy, it was horrible! And the only one that was consistent was, When the pain gets great enough, youll replace the hip. And I said, Excuse me? I first met Zappa near the end of Retaliation, at a big rock and blues festival in Brussels. And so we kept waiting around to see if he was gonna go take care of it. So I was about ready to crash and didnt know it. Id write some melodies, Id write some hooks. This is the healthiest Ive ever been, and I think its the best Ive been playin. And they said, Well, what do you mean? And I said, Thats exactly what I mean, is what Im saying. Then the band's ego got too much for me to cope with and I had to dump them. And its what I really love. With the other company that Im a part of, Nocturne [a video-production studio]between that and the residuals that I get, yes, I could live comfortably and just hang it up. I moved over there. Theres like 20 different prosthetics, all claiming to be the one that lasts, and I had to do research on that crap. He went to bat for me in a huge way. But for the most part, Im just glad that I didnt completely F up everything. Yeah. but you were never a critics band. And fall back into my life. Of course we were friends. AD: I stay away from commercials. He was Ringo's chauffeur and funny enough, he played bass. It can make you just live your life in a state of insecurity and fear. But thats okay. RM: How did you first get involved with music? They would have kept going, I know that. RM: Do you do all of your own tuning, or is your roadie able to do some of it? Now I feel like I have 100 percent of myself here, and Im more into it than Ive ever been into it. You think they would have been happier if theyd made it in that prog-rock incarnation? In December 1964 he joined Merseybeat group the Mojos, who were renamed Stu James & the Mojos, with original members vocalist Stu James and guitarist Nick Crouch and bass player Lewis Collins (later an actor in The Professionals). Id gotten back in touch with parts of the life I had before I was successful. They were certainly amenable to it when I joined them. He gave me the back bedroom at his place. I met him when Journey was opening up for Jeff Beck, before Steve was in the band. I don't feel I'm perspiring my energy away, like I used to. In these days, it would actually be respectable! I think anything beyond a 5 or 6-minute solo is a waste of time. It has a lot of open rolls, 16th notes, 5-stroke rolls and triplets in nice little combinations. But he is more of a marching-type rudimental drummer. . And then you went on hiatus. And I didnt want to stop either, by the way. **Do you think you made bad decisions in terms of how you handled things with the band? At home, I've got a drum kit, but the trouble with a drum kit at home is that it's so damn loud, it blows your hearing. And theyre all good. How do you go about working up new material? And that stars on the sidewalk. Only certain people understand the technique parts. Yeah. For a while, I was doing too many studio gigs, and I couldn't wait to get on the road. And Im grateful for all of it, I wouldnt trade it for the worldbut it didnt squelch much, yknow? Do you think they wished they didnt need a charismatic singer out front to succeed they way they did? Hes saying, yknow, If these guys wanna go on, I think they should just start something new and not use the Journey name. Dont crack the stone is what he kept on saying. As I said in the beginning with you, theres something reverent about that, to me. Using your fingers makes em better. So I was ready to go, go, go, and I think pretty much everybody else in the band was. But they went on to make a lot of money. And I ran out of the coffee shop and said, I gotta get in on this. [laughs] She looked up, her eyes got like saucers. I look at people like BB King and I go, man, God bless em. And we had differences of opinion in some areas, which eventually wore us down a bit. I wanna let go. And Im sure they thought, Oh, there he goes. I found that out with my 14" drum. So I came home, and started seeing a series of doctors, getting opinions. Sopranos! Its like, What the fuck? So I left them and was out of work for two weeks, which was the longest 1 had ever been out of work. The next day Jeff Beck called me and. It wasn't anything special, but I thought it was neat it was a different sound-sort of a power thing. I used to play with a group called the Merseysippi Jazz Band. Most of them are in L.A. RM: How did your professional career develop? Everybody at the airport, man, walkin by, givin me the thumbs-up, like, Yo! Pete writes these big, off the wall, sort of English rock songs, with big dramatic openings and classical-type things. The Melody Maker called it An exceptional debut in it s enthusiastic review at the time. And you can only run on the road and be in front of people so long before it doesnt fix you enough, to where you can run away from things you havent addressed. Originally I was only going to play on half the record, and they were going to do the other half with another studio musician. Do you think you'll have your own group again sometime? Those are the guys that I look up to. I mean, I heard him the first time with David Bowie. He will just come in with an idea of what he wants to hear, and we'll all work it out. I had to spend some time doing something which didn't take too much mental thought-something I could just have fun with. I was concerned that it would play while somebody got whacked.
